Teonia Stokes: 22-Year-Old Pregnant Georgia Student Killed; Man Charged

Teonia Stokes, a 22-year-old Black woman from Social Circle, Georgia, was senselessly taken from her loved ones in the early morning hours of January 25, 2026.

Just seven months pregnant with a baby boy and only weeks away from giving birth, Teonia was weeks from welcoming her second child and months from completing her teaching degree at Kennesaw State University (KSU), where she was student teaching in Gwinnett County.

Teonia was a devoted mother to her two-year-old daughter, Kambree, and family members describe her as a bright, caring young woman whose life held so much promise. She was pursuing her passion for education and building a future for her growing family.

Tragically, that future was stolen when Teonia was shot and killed at a residence on G.W. Carver Drive in Monroe, Walton County. Her unborn son also lost his life in the shooting. Another adult male, 25-year-old Curdarious Williams, was wounded by gunfire in the same incident and survived.

Police responded around 2:30 a.m. to reports of a shooting and found Teonia deceased at the scene. The investigation quickly focused on 36-year-old Dorreous Brooks of Monroe, who was identified as the suspect. Authorities considered him armed and dangerous, issued public alerts, and obtained warrants for felony murder and feticide.

With collaborative efforts from the Monroe Police Department, Walton County Sheriff’s Office, Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and other agencies, Brooks was arrested without incident on January 27, 2026 (which would have been Teonia's 23rd birthday). He was charged with felony murder and feticide in connection with the deaths of Teonia and her unborn child. Bond was denied during his initial court appearance.

Teonia's family has expressed profound grief, with relatives noting she "didn’t deserve this" and highlighting the devastating impact on her young daughter, who now faces life without her mother. Community members and loved ones remember Teonia as a sweet, promising individual whose loss—along with that of her baby boy—has left an irreplaceable void.

Her story underscores the ongoing crisis of violence that disproportionately affects Black women and pregnant individuals.

Teonia Stokes was more than a headline; she was a daughter, mother, expectant mother, aspiring educator, and beloved community member whose life mattered deeply. May she and her unborn son rest in peace, and may justice bring some measure of peace to her grieving family.
