Gabryel Ayers, 26, Killed in Chicago Ambush, Baby Daughter Unharmed
In a heartbreaking act of violence that underscores the ongoing crisis of gun violence in Chicago's Black communities, 26-year-old Gabryel Ayers was fatally shot on February 4, 2026, while sitting in a car with her boyfriend and infant daughter.
Remembering Gabryel Ayers
Gabryel Ayers was a young mother whose life was cut tragically short, leaving behind a grieving family and a daughter who will grow up without her.
Her godfather, Kirk Bell, spoke emotionally to local media, describing the unimaginable loss: "This here is unbelievable."
Little is publicly known about Ayers' personal life, but her death adds to the grim tally of Black women lost to gun violence in Chicago, where systemic issues like poverty, gang activity, and inadequate community resources continue to fuel such tragedies.
Ayers' story is a stark reminder of the disproportionate impact of urban violence on Black families, particularly women and children who often become unintended victims in cycles of retaliation.
The incident occurred in broad daylight in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, leaving her family devastated and highlighting the vulnerability of Black women to senseless street violence.
The Ambush on South May Street in Chicago
The shooting unfolded around 1:25 p.m. in the 7900 block of South May Street, near the iconic St. Sabina Church.
Ayers, also known as "Gabby," was in the passenger seat of a white Chevrolet sedan, with her 27-year-old boyfriend behind the wheel and their baby girl—less than a year old—in the back seat.
Witnesses and video footage captured three to four assailants approaching the vehicle on foot, unleashing a barrage of gunfire—estimated at over 50 rounds from long guns and handguns.
One gunman even climbed onto the hood to fire directly into the car before the group fled in a red SUV. The vehicle, riddled with bullets, crashed into a nearby GMC van.
Ayers sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her body and was rushed to Little Company of Mary Hospital in critical condition, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Her boyfriend was shot in the arm and buttocks but was reported to be in good condition at another hospital. Miraculously, the infant escaped unharmed, though witnesses described finding her crying and holding a lollipop amid the chaos.
Chicago Police recovered dozens of shell casings at the scene, indicating the ferocity of the attack. As of February 5, 2026, no arrests have been made, and the motive remains under investigation.
Some community speculation points to possible retaliation stemming from online disputes, where Ayers allegedly mocked deceased individuals or taunted rivals, though authorities have not confirmed this.
