Ta’Kiya Young, a 21-year-old pregnant mother, stopped by the grocery store on Thursday, August 24, 2023. What occurred inside that Kroger in Columbus, Ohio has turned into a tragedy for one family and the community of Blendon Township.

Police descended upon the store about 6 p.m., where it was observed that Young’s vehicle had purportedly struck an exterior wall of the building.

There is no record of a 911 call being made and it is unclear how officers were dispatched to the scene. What is known is that Young was shot by an officer.

According to news reports, officers were told that a woman was shoplifting alcohol from the store. Another account, which comes from Blendon Township Police Chief John Belford, is that officers were in the parking lot helping a woman who was locked out of her car.

Bodycam video footage shows officers ordering a woman out of her car more than a dozen times, according to news reports. Interestingly, that footage has not been released publicly.

“The woman put the car in gear and accelerated forward,” Belford said in a statement. “The officer who was directly in the path of the oncoming car fired one shot through the front wiindshield.”

Columbus civil rights attorney Sean Walton, who said he has been in touch with the victim’s family, told a media outlet that while it is still too early to pass judgment on whether the officers’ actions were warranted, he is watching the case closely.

“When the time times to fully evaluate what we’ve uncovered … we’ll decide if there’s any kind of accountability that needs to take place.,” he told told local TV news station ABC6/fOX28.

It remains unclear whether Young’s gunshot wound came before her car struck the wall or after. The young mother, who has two other kids ages 6 and 2, was pronounced dead at nearby St. Ann’s Hospital.

Her unborn baby did not survive.
