Krystal Pendergraph: Woman Found Shot Dead Inside Vehicle in Portland
A quiet Saturday afternoon in Northwest Portland turned deadly when a 39-year-old woman was discovered fatally shot inside a vehicle, prompting an urgent homicide investigation by the Portland Police Bureau. The victim has been identified as Krystal Lynne Pendergraph, a Portland resident whose life was cut short in what authorities are calling a brazen act of violence.
Wiley Tillman, the victim’s niece, told local media that Pendergraph was very instrumental in her life.
“She taught me so much, her elegance, her grace, her kindness, her compassion,” Tillman told KPTV. “She was a friend to everyone. She could make a friend in seconds. She was just a beautiful spirit.”
The incident unfolded around 4:30 p.m. on October 11, 2025, when officers responded to a welfare check call near Northwest Kearney Street, between Northwest 21st and 23rd Avenues. Upon arrival, first responders found Pendergraph unresponsive in the driver's seat of a parked car, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives quickly descended on the area, closing down the bustling stretch of Kearney Street to facilitate a thorough crime scene examination.
Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting occurred prior to the welfare check, though the exact timeline and circumstances remain under scrutiny.
No arrests have been made, and police have described the motive as unknown at this early stage."This is a devastating loss for our community," said Portland Police Bureau spokesperson Lt. Nathan Sherrod in a statement released late Saturday. "We are committed to bringing justice for Krystal and her loved ones.
Anyone with information, no matter how small, is urged to come forward."Pendergraph's family, grappling with unimaginable grief, gathered for a candlelight vigil on Monday evening at the site of the tragedy.
Under a canopy of flickering lights and tear-streaked faces, relatives remembered her as "a beautiful spirit" whose warmth touched everyone she met.
"Krystal had a laugh that could light up the darkest room," one family member shared with local media. "She didn't deserve this. We need answers."The Black Femicide Prevention Coalition, a local advocacy group, echoed the family's call for swift action, highlighting the incident as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by women of color in urban settings.
"Portland must confront the rising tide of violence against Black women," the coalition stated in a public post. "Krystal's story is not isolated—it's a symptom of a deeper crisis."This killing marks Portland's 36th homicide of 2025, a figure that, while lower than the 63 reported at this point last year, underscores the persistent challenges in curbing gun violence amid ongoing recovery from the pandemic and social unrest.
Investigators are combing through surveillance footage from nearby businesses and appealing to the public for tips. A $2,500 reward is being offered by Crime Stoppers of Oregon for information leading to an arrest.
Witnesses or those with relevant details are encouraged to contact Portland police at 503-823-0070 or submit anonymous tips via the hotline at 503-823-HELP (4357).As the sun sets on another day without answers, Northwest Portland mourns a life stolen too soon. The search for truth—and the shooter—continues.
