Monica Morris: New Jersey Teacher Killed Amid Plans to Leave Marriage
Monica Morris, a 51-year-old culinary arts teacher at Trenton Central High School and devoted mother of four, was fatally stabbed in her Erial, New Jersey home early Tuesday morning, according to authorities. Her death came as she prepared to end her marriage to her husband, Jerome Morris, 50, who had a reported history of stalking, threats, and harassment.
Morris was found with multiple fatal knife wounds to her throat and neck in the third-floor bedroom of the family’s townhouse on Freedom Way, which had been set on fire. She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after her daughter’s desperate 911 call around 2:25 a.m.
A Daughter’s Hearbreaking Account
In one of the most devastating details, Monica’s daughter witnessed the horror. She told investigators she heard screaming from her parents’ bedroom and her mother crying out that Jerome was trying to kill her. The daughter found a key, unlocked the door, and saw the attack unfolding before calling for help and telling dispatchers, “He’s killing my mom.”
Responding officers entered the burning home and found Jerome covered in blood and armed with a knife near Monica’s body. Two other adults escaped unharmed. Jerome was treated for injuries and taken into custody. He has been charged with first-degree murder and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose; additional charges may follow from the fire investigation.
Remembering Monica Morris
Monica Morris was much more than a tragic headline. Colleagues and family described her as a compassionate, generous educator whose warmth and talents touched countless lives. As a culinary instructor, she brought creativity and care into her classroom, often sharing homemade desserts and taking time to connect with students and staff.
A GoFundMe organized by her son-in-law highlights her role as a loving mother and role model: “Her compassion and generosity made her a role model to many, and her presence brought warmth and hope to those around her.” The fundraiser, aimed at supporting her four children, was nearing its $13,000 goal as of late last week.
Trenton Councilwoman-at-Large Crystal Feliciano shared a moving tribute on Instagram, remembering her colleague’s gentle spirit and daily kindnesses:
“I will miss yelling your name out in the mornings as you pass by my office. I will miss your tasty desserts that only you could make. I will miss our talks... Our school and community will never be the same with you no longer in it. Thank you for all the love you poured into our students and our staff. Thank you for your gentle spirit and for sharing your talents with so many.”
Monica Morris had taken the brave step of telling her husband she wanted to leave the marriage. Her death underscores the dangers faced by many women attempting to escape controlling or abusive relationships.
Those who knew her will remember her not for how she died, but for the light, creativity, and love she brought into the world as a teacher, mother, and friend. Her family and community are left grieving a profound loss while seeking justice and healing for her children.
