Imani Peterson, 19-Year-Old Aspiring veterinarian, Dies 2 Weeks After Shooting
Imani Peterson, a 19-year-old aspiring veterinarian, was looking forward to helping people and their pets. Unfortunately, she was one of four people shot at a party in Detroit on June 1, 2025.
Imani passed away two weeks later after a valiant fight for her life, leaving behind her 4-month-old son and a grieving family.
“It’s devastating to get a phone call at 2 a.m., a call that changed the world,” said her mother, Ceria Joyce.
A 2022 Mumford High School graduate, Imani was remembered as a joyful and radiant presence. “Everybody out here had a relationship with Imani. She was a happy, beautiful young woman,” her cousin Ontavia Joyce told Fox 2 in Detroit.
On Saturday, loved ones gathered after her funeral, wearing yellow—her favorite color—to celebrate her life. Her family emphasized she was an innocent bystander, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, which also injured three others at the Trinity Street party. A GoFundMe set up by the family says this:

Imani had a heart of gold she love her family, all children and people in general. She worked hard and had a dream of becoming a Veterinarian. She just gave birth to a beautiful baby boy 4 months prior that she loved dearly. This is a hard time for my family and myself and we are asking all friends family and public to help us with the burial of our sweet angel. Thank you so much.
