On Friday, August 14, 2020 about 11 p.m., police said Aurora McCarter, 17, and another person allegedly met with a 16-year-old boy to purchase a gun. Aurora was shot dead in a robbery gone bad.

Aurora McCarter was a standout student at Purcell Marian High School in Cincinnati.

Even adults who knew her saw something special in the 17-year-old.

“When I say she was a ray of sunshine and she would brighten up anyone’s day... she gained so many friendships, she could get along with anyone,” Officer Maylynda Jordan told Cincinnati.com. “She could walk in the room and meet a new friend and it would seem like she’s known them forever.”

Aurora had apparently run away from home, like so many girls do when they are searching for a better life.

What struck those who knew her was that the Cincinnati teenager was headed for a great future on the right side of the law.

The teen had served as a Cincinnati Youth Police Youth service cadet for the past two years. She had displayed a caring attitude while doing community service and was a joy to be around.

"She never once complained," Officer Carrie Hollyfield recounted to TV station WLWT5. "She always did it with teamwork."

No one really knows what happened this summer as more young people have been forced to go it alone in the pandemic, but something changed for Aurora.

In July, she resigned from the cadets, reportedly without giving a reason. On July 7, a missing persons report was filed, saying that Aurora was "endangered."

On Friday, August 14, 2020 about 11 p.m., police said she and another person allegedly met with a 16-year-old boy to purchase a gun.

That purported gun seller robbed the girl instead, shooting Aurora in the process.

Aurora was rushed to Mercy Health Queen City Medical Center, where she died.

and another person allegedly met with a 16-year-old to purchase a gun the suspect was selling, the documents say.

A 16-year-old suspect has been charged with murder, according to reports.
