Trecia Carruthers: 35-Year-Old Mother Shot Dead In Lauderhill, Florida
Trecia Spencer Carruthers, 35, was a South Florida entrepreneur trying to get her notary business off the ground. Her sister described her to news media as “the cool big sister” who would do anything for her daughter.
On Tuesday, October 31, 2023 — Halloween —Carruthers was found lying unresponsive in the road shortly before 4:30 p.m., according to Lauderhill Police. She had been shot multiple times.
Two other people — a girl and adult male — were also found injured from gunshot wounds and were taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. They are expected to recover, Lauderhill Police said.
The adult male hurt in the shooting is the father of Carruther’s 10-year-old daughter, Nisha Spencer told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper. The girl witnessed her mother’s murder, the sister said.
Spencer, 31, told the newspaper that her sister was “nothing but helpful and caring” and was “the direct representation of her heart being bigger than her body.”
Carruthers’ parents told NBC Miami that they believe their daughter was targeted. “She did not deserve that,” the victim’s father told the news outlet.
A 17-year-old who was grazed by a bullet said that she was inside her home when bullets started flying.
"Two of them flew inside my room from the window. That’s when I felt something hit my leg," she said. "I couldn’t hear and then I felt something fly past my face, too,” the teen, who didn’t want to be identified, told NBC Miami..” I ran out the room and I went to the hallway to my mom, and that’s when I started panicking. I saw a lot of blood on my leg and they had put a towel on me."
The teenager is the daughter of DJ Shonuff, a popular DJ in the South Florida area.
Lauderhill Police, who are investigating the shooting, have not released any information about a motive or suspect in the case.
