Friends and family of a Chicago woman are trying to make sense of a tragedy sparked by an argument in the city's Marquette Park. Police said a 36-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend, who then attacked another man and slashed the victim's 75-year-old father in an episode of rage, authorities said.

The violent attack on Elizabeth Kennedy was witnessed by her 13-year-old daughter, local media reported.

Authorities arrested Eddie Crowder, who tried to cut a 34-year-old man who Kennedy has a child by.

Kennedy had went to the man's home to drop off her teenaged daughter, Assistant State Attorney Jason Coelho said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Another man got into it with Crowder over the alleged treatment of the former's 16-year-old son and things soon got physical. The man’s 75-year-old father and Kennedy tried to break it up. The older man was knocked to the ground during the melee, the Sun-Times reported.

As the man tried to help the 75-year-old to his feet, Crowder lounged at him with the knife, authorities said. 

“The knife struck (Kennedy) directly in the chest,” Coelho was quoted as saying. As she lay on the ground, “blood pooled around her,” he said.

The Sun-Times then says this series of events happened:

Crowder then stabbed the man in the side of the head. As the man raised his arms to defend himself, Crowder slashed his arms. When the man turned to run away, Crowder chased him and stabbed him in the back.

The episode ended after the man's girlfriend yelled at Crowder, who fled. He was arrested at his home in Oak Lawn later that night, the newspaper said.

According to the  Chicago Tribune, Crowder is being held without bail in the Cook County jail. He is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
